The Challenge: Why MyGarage Was Needed
Managing vehicle maintenance isn’t always straightforward. Between oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and unexpected repairs, keeping up with a car’s service history can quickly become overwhelming. Paper records get lost, and spreadsheets require manual updates.
I wanted a simple, intelligent solution that would:
Automatically retrieve vehicle specs from a VIN or make/model entry.
Track and schedule maintenance based on manufacturer recommendations.
Forecast potential repairs based on vehicle age, mileage, and common issues.
Store service history and let users easily update it via natural language.
Provide part recommendations and links to maintenance guides and repair videos.
With that in mind, I set out to create MyGarage, leveraging the power of ChatGPT’s custom GPT capabilities to deliver a seamless, interactive experience for vehicle owners.
The Collaborative Process: How MyGarage Took Shape
Building MyGarage wasn’t just about stringing together a few prompts—it was a deep dive into AI-assisted tool creation. The goal was to make a GPT that could function as a long-term vehicle minder, not just a one-off assistant.
1. Defining the Core Functionality
I started by outlining what MyGarage needed to do and how it should structure vehicle records. After several iterations, the core functionality took shape:
Vehicle Workspaces: Each vehicle has its own dedicated canvas, allowing for structured tables, embedded images, and links.
Automatic Data Retrieval: By entering a VIN, the GPT pulls specs like engine type, transmission, and dimensions.
Maintenance Scheduler: Tracks oil changes, tire rotations, and major services, offering reminders based on usage.
Parts & Repair Assistance: Provides recommended parts (with budget-friendly and premium alternatives) and step-by-step repair guides.
Service History Logging: Allows quick updates by uploading invoices or entering details conversationally.
Predictive Repair Forecasting: Estimates the next likely repairs based on vehicle age and mileage, helping users budget accordingly.
2. Refining the Master Prompt
Once I had a clear vision, I worked extensively with ChatGPT to refine the master prompt—the backbone of MyGarage’s functionality. Some key refinements included:
Optimizing Data Structuring: Ensuring each vehicle’s data is stored separately and persistently, rather than in a single-threaded conversation.
Enhancing Natural Language Inputs: Allowing users to add records naturally (e.g., “Log an oil change for my Jeep at Gayton Automotive on 01/20/2025 for $39.97”).
Improving Predictive Maintenance Alerts: Factoring in not just mileage but also seasonality and historical service patterns.
3. Naming and Branding
Choosing a name that was simple, intuitive, and memorable was crucial. I started by generating 10 potential names that captured the essence of vehicle management and AI-powered assistance. Among them, one stood out: MyGarage.
Once we had the name, we refined the branding to enhance clarity and appeal. We selected the 🚗🔧 emojis to add visual recognition and condensed the name into a format that balanced brevity with impact. After several iterations, we landed on "MyGarage: Track Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs"—a name that effectively conveys its purpose while remaining concise and engaging.
